In our current mortgage
market, a low
credit score
can prevent you from qualifying for a home loan. Many times there
are charges against
your credit that do not belong
there. You have the right to
contesting these errors by sending a
letter to the
Complaint Department of the
credit reporting agency that attached the incorrect information to your report.
If the protested entry on the report is erroneous, it must be
removed.
Building a Better Credit Report
is something you should do ahead of any financial transaction. If your
credit scores are good, you can negotiate a better deal with the
lender.
You are entitled to a free copy of your credit report from
each of the three reporting agencies once every 12 months.
http://www.annualcreditreport.com
or
http://www.freecreditreport.com
or call the three national credit reporting
companies, toll-free:
Experian (888) 397-3742
TransUnion (800) 916-8800
Equifax (800) 685-1111
There are several credit monitoring companies online. If you
plan to buy a home in next 12 months, using a credit monitoring
company will assist you in determining what improvements you may
need to complete in order to reach your home buying goal.
We recommend you remain vigilant and report any suspected
identity theft to them and the proper law enforcement
authorities, including the Federal Trade Commission. Please
visit the FTC’s web site,
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft, or
call them at (877) 438-4338 to learn more about protecting
yourself from identity theft, such as requesting a fraud alert.
Credit Repair Services
If you have a credit related issue that is preventing you
from buying the house of your dreams, there are
credit repair companies that can help remedy
erroneous credit predicaments. They do charge a fee for their
services so if you have a few extra minutes and the inclination,
a
Do-It-Yourself fix could save you some extra cash.
The process is relatively simple to complete and the credit
companies must remove bad information from your report when it
is confirmed incorrect.

When buying a house
it is critical to have good credit. These free sites will allow you to get
an idea of where you stand, and can be accessed once a year without negatively affecting
your credit score.
Real estate purchases generally require financing;
getting a loan depends greatly on how good your credit is. You will also
be able to obtain a better interest rate and have the ability to negotiate
more favorable finance terms.
Even if you don’t have a poor
credit history, some financial advisors and consumer advocates suggest you
review your credit report periodically. Why?
-
Because the information it contains
affects whether you can get a loan or insurance — and how much you will
have to pay for it.
-
To make sure the information is accurate,
complete, and up-to-date before you apply for a loan for a major
purchase like a house or car, buy insurance, or apply for a job.
-
To help guard against identity theft.
That’s when someone uses your personal information — like your name,
your Social Security number, or your credit card number — to commit
fraud. Identity thieves may use your information to open a new credit
card account in your name. Then, when they don’t pay the bills, the
delinquent account is reported on your credit report. Inaccurate
information like that could affect your ability to get credit,
insurance, or even a job.
Identity theft
If you suspect you
might be a victim of identity theft, contact the three major
credit bureaus listed below to place a fraud alert on your
credit file. You also can order a credit report to identify
any unauthorized activity.
Equifax 1.800.525.6285
Experian 1.888.397.3742
Trans Union 1.800.680.7289
